How to Cook Steel Cut Oats

Steel Cut Oats (also known as Pinhead Oats) take a little longer to cook than rolled oats but they have a fantastic texture and are nutritionally better for you. They take about 10-20 mins to cook, or soaking them overnight will reduce the cooking time. They can also be cooked the night before (see the note below) and re-heating within a few mins.

Basic Preparation:

  • 1 cup Dad’s Steel Cut Oats
  • 3 cups water
  • ¼ tsp salt

Makes 3-5 servings, prep time 5 mins cook time 10-20 minutes

Bring 3 cups water and 1/4 tsp salt to a boil then add 1 cup Dad’s Steel Cut Oats.

  • Reduce heat to a low simmer. Cover and cook 10 - 20 minutes (depending on how chewy you would like it). Stir occasionally.

Remove from heat and let stand covered for a couple of minutes.

  • Serve with milk, cream or a small amount of butter.
  • Add brown sugar, honey or rice malt syrup for sweetness.

Add fresh or dried fruit, coconut flakes, nuts or a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Steel Cut Oats can also be cooked the night before and reheated the next morning. Unlike rolled oats they don’t become gluggy, but just creamier and more delicious the next day!  They can also be soaked overnight so that they cook quicker the next day.
